More About Where We Work: Nakivale Refugee Settlement

  • Nakivale refugee settlement, established in 1958 and recognized officially in 1960, is one of the oldest and largest refugee settlements in the world.

  • Situated 200 km from Kampala, Uganda's capital, Nakivale spans over 180 square kilometres, divided into three zones and 74 individual villages

  • This enormous area is geographically divided into three administrative zones – Base camp, Juru and Rubondo. These three zones, in turn, contain a total of 74 individual villages. As of June 2023, Nakivale hosted 175,092  refugees from various countries, including Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Eritrea.

BACKGROUND

State of Education of Refugee Children in Nakivale

  • Nakivale faces significant challenges in providing education for its 119,587 children. Unfortunately, with only 1 high school, and 8 elementary schools, only 18,000 children are enrolled in school.

  • Schools suffer from poor infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, limited teaching staff, and a lack of teacher assistants. Additionally, many children completing primary school are unable to attend high school.

"Poverty remains high and inflation is on the rise, which will increase economic vulnerability and tensions among refugees and the host community as social services provided by humanitarian actors reduce in 2023".

02.

“Refugee children are facing an uphill battle for education
and safety. Malnutrition rates among children are increasing with four in every ten children being anemic and seven out of every 100 children aged six months to five years."
"For each classroom, there is an average of 131 children, and one teacher is available for every 73 children. They sit on the floor or share desks with up to six other pupils. 51 percent of children exposed to violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation are not receiving support due to staffing gaps in case management and alternative care services."
